I Moved to Immich… Can It Really Replace Google Photos?
If you love the convenience of Google Photos, but hate the idea of handing your photo library over to a company built on adte, surveillance, and whatever they're doing with AI, there's a privacy first alternative you should know about called Image. Image is a self-hosted open source photo and video platform that gives you an experience similar to Google Photos without sending all your data to the cloud. Your photos stay on your server and in your control. Image has features like automatic photo sync from your phone, object search and recognition, face detection, geoloccation, and more. And it's all done locally. But of course, there's a catch. Image gives you privacy and control, but with great control comes...

my FINAL pick for a self-hosted photo server - immich
I have been on a journey for quite some time to host as much as I possibly can within my home lab now probably the most important thing only second to maybe your personal documents is your personal photo library and like many others I was a customer of Google photos uh the Amazon photo service I even used both of them hand inand because I still had the mindset at the time that I couldn't trust just one of them to keep my data secure and safe and even looking back on it that mindset was kind of flawed because you really shouldn't have your personal photo collection being handled by some giant Tech conglomerate and that is why...

Your Own Private Google Photos — Self-Hosted Immich is a self-hosted photo and video backup app you run on your own server — giving you an Apple Photos or Google Photos-style experience without a big tech company hosting your memories. Install the app on Android or iPhone and sync your photos and videos straight to your own hardware instead. It's mature, works really well, and is a great pick if you're already moving away from services like Dropbox for your files. #Immich #SelfHosted #Privacy #OpenSource #DevTools Link to the Resource Vault: https://thenextnewthing.ai/Resources (There is also a clickable link in my bio) Link to the full video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tX9ANddpAqc 🔗 GitHub: https://github.com/immich-app/immich 🔗 Website: https://immich.app/

Your own Google Photos, self-hosted. Full Immich guide on a VPS. Storage full and paying $10 a month forever? Host it yourself: phone backup
Hey folks, your phone says storage full and the cloud wants $10 a month forever, just to hold your own photos. Let's fix that. We'll self-host Immich. It looks and works like Google Photos, but it's yours. Phone backup, albums, and search by what's actually in the picture. You need a server with some disk for this. Any VPS works, Vultr for example, promo code VPS 20 takes 20% off. SSH in, and let's go. Step 1: Install Docker with one line. Curl-FSSL get.docker.com piped into shell. Step 2: Make a folder and download the two files Immich gives you, the compose file and the example environment file. Step 3: Open the .env file and set upload location. That's the...

Immich 3.0 Released with Big Upgrades for Self-Hosted Photo Libraries
Image 3.0 has been released as a major update to the self-hosted photo and video management platform, introducing several breaking changes that primarily affect API endpoints and third-party integrations. A key feature in Image 3.0 is mobile non-destructive editing, which now more closely matches the web version. Following earlier web-based image editing support, users can now crop, rotate, and adjust photos in the mobile app without modifying the original file. Edits are reversible and can be modified later, including from the web interface. Some previous features, such as recoloring, live photo editing, and local asset editing, have been temporarily removed, with plans to restore them in future updates. Workflows, accessible in the web interface under utilities, introduced as a preview...

Sorry if this is an ignorant post but I have a few questions about self hosting
You control the backups. You know what’s on them and where they are. This can also be a giant downside if you don’t know how to properly back your stuff up. You also have access to your data no matter what. If a service changes the rules, gets hacked, shuts down, etc you need to be able to respond quickly and it might be out of your hands. This is not likely, but something to think about. It’s als I can definitely reply to question 1 because it was the main reason I turned to self-hosting ( and not subscriptions and privacy like most self-hosters are after) and that is the multitude of self-hosted services that do one thing and...
